Dear Parent or Guardian:

Rhode Island General Law 16.1-7 (a-c) requires schools to develop a Personal Literacy Program for all students who would benefit from supplemental reading instruction. The process is called a PLP (Personal Literacy Plan). The purpose of the PLP is to provide intensive classroom instruction based on a student’s needs. The plan is a documentation of the strategic approaches that a teacher will follow to provide support to a student. The PLP will serve as a record of instruction (used by the teacher) that will inform subsequent school personnel of successful approaches.

The PLP is not a legal document, nor is it connected to Special Education programs. In the simplest of terms, it is a teacher’s action plan for improving a child’s reading instruction and proficiency. The process of providing needs-based instruction is nothing new. The State is now asking that documentation of these efforts be recorded.

As a partner in your child’s education, we would like you to be informed that a PLP will be written for your child. If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me at any time.

Sincerely,
