Video: Andrew Jackson

We know our seventh President by sight (he's on every $20 bill, after all), but what do we really know about the passionate and contradictory everyman whose controversial legacy resonates to this day?

  • A lavish feature-length portrait of the controversial man who lead America at the crossroads of history.
  • Filmed with cooperation and assistance from the Muscogee Creek Tribal Nation
  • Jackson replaced Grover Cleveland on the $20 in 1928.

He was the first "commoner" to ascend to the American Presidency, a successful duelist (13 duels with one fatality) and unschooled war hero. He remains a controversial figure to this day, but at the time he took office Andrew Jackson was exactly who the nation needed in order to fulfill its painful destiny of expansion and autonomy.

Jackson thwarted the British, reshaped American politics forever, lost his wife on the eve of his inauguration, and caused the "Trail of Tears." His beginnings were truly humble, being the first President actually born in a log cabin. His public life - rife with successful military campaigns, unlikely electoral ones and deeply divisive acts of legislation - almost pales in comparison to the action and drama of his private life. He was orphaned by 15, dueled frequently, loved passionately and scandalously, and was, despite refusing to support secession, a slave-owner.

In this richly produced biographical documentary, THE HISTORY CHANNEL® depicts the fascinating, powerful life of Andrew Jackson from the age of 14 to his 1845 death at age 78. From his days as a runner during the Revolutionary War, which lead to his incarceration as a prisoner of war, to his sickly demise at his Nashville estate, The Hermitage, this special presentation tracks the remarkable life and career of this uniquely American figure.

Supplementing dramatic reenactments and location filming with interviews featuring leading experts on Jackson and his times, ANDREW JACKSON paints a rich, fulfilling and balanced portrait of the man described as "driven," "confident" and even "cruel."

He was a one-of-a-kind personality at the center of a critical point in our nation's history, and THE HISTORY CHANNEL® has brought his legacy stunningly to life with ANDREW JACKSON.
