Summary:

Using archival film footage, this program documents the creation of the State of Israel -- as European survivors of the Nazi Holocaust arrived seeking a new life in an ancient homeland. Arab resentment brought an immediate outbreak of violence between the fledgling state and Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Jordan. When, in 1947, the United Nations General Assembly divided Palestine into an Arab state and a Jewish state, placing Jerusalem under international control, the resulting turmoil led to six wars during the second half of the 20th Century. On-camera commentaries from P.L.O. Chairman Yaser Arafat, former Israeli Prime Ministers Yitzhak Rabin and Golda Meir, and former Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres, impart personal impact to the conflicts that have embroiled the region since 1948. The program culminates with mutual recognition between Israel and the P.L.O. in September 1993, and the steps the two powers took toward peace at that time.
