Video: Roman Vice

Summary:

In this sensational documentary, we make a vice-filled visit to ancient Rome. The sexual morals of the Romans often appear extravagant compared to modern attitudes; we outline the debauchery, luxury, cruelty and depravity of citizens and emperors alike.

Firstly, we look at the opulent extravagance of Rome’s architecture. From luxurious villas with hypocaust-heated rooms and mosaics, to labyrinthine bath complexes, the Romans were committed to beautifying their surroundings.

They also knew how to entertain. We take a look at Roman amphitheatres, where crowds gathered to watch enormous public games and festivals. Perhaps the most famous example of this is the Circus Maximus, an ancient hippodrome and mass entertainment venue situated in Rome, in the valley between the Aventine and Palatine hills. In 50BC, the venue underwent an enormous expansion under the guidance of Julius Caesar. The track was six hundred metres long and eighty metres wide; the hippodrome could accommodate 250,000 spectators.

In our quest to understand the sexual morals of the Romans, we examine some of the most extravagant and powerful figures of Ancient Rome. The Emperor Caligula, who ruled between AD12 and AD41, was famed for his multiple and peculiar sexual escapades. He was accused of having incestuous relationships with all three of his sisters; he also allegedly opened a brothel in his palace. We also look at the controversial reign of Nero, the thrill-seeking Emperor who allegedly "fiddled while Rome burned."
