Great Zimbabwe: Monument to the Zimbabwe State

Great Zimbabwe Ruins The ruins of the Great Temple at Zimbabwe's capital, Great Zimbabwe. The city's ruins were discovered by explorers in 1868 and excavated by archaeologists at the turn of the century. The temple and surrounding buildings - one of the most spectacular examples of medieval African civilization - were constructed sometime after the eleventh century and were abandoned after 1450.

African workers load African gold, iron, ivory, and coconuts onto dhows, or Arab boats.
