Writing a Journal to Commemorate Gupta Achievements
Mr. Mitchell's Social Studies Class

Assignments to hand in:    Travel Notes About Gupta Achievements    &    Journal Commemorating Gupta Achievements

Step 1: Introduction - Look at the picture below and read the following text:

India was reunited in 320 C.E. after about 500 years of political fragmentation. The Gupta (GOOP - tuh) Empire, which began under the reign of Chandragupta I, united most of northern India from 320 to 550 C.E. The Gupta family, who ruled from the northern city of Magadha, united their kingdoms through war. The Gupta maintained power by giving relative autonomy to the many towns and regions under their control, rather than creating a central administrative power as the leaders of the Mauryan Empire, the first empire to unite India, had done. This strategy allowed the Gupta Empire to maintain power over a large part of India for almost 250 years.

The period under Gupta rule is called India's "Golden Age" because of great achievements made in the arts, literature, religion, science, technology, and education. Because the Gupta maintained peace and a strong, stable government and economy, the empire could provide support for the work of international trade. Many merchants and visitors from empires in Asia and around the Mediterranean traveled to India to trade and to learn from Indian scholars.
