"History cannot give us a program for the future, but it can give us a fuller understanding of ourselves, and of our common humanity, so that we can better face the future."
Robert Penn Warren
Step 1: Choose Your Significant Event - Choose a Significan Event in World History (click link to see the list) Only one person can cover a topic. All students MUST have different significant events. More than likely, you will NOT get your first choice, so be prepared by choosing a group of topics you care to research..
Step 2: Research - Use the World History Timeline Assignment Graphic Organizer [Word Version] to complete your research. You may use encylopedias, other texts, and the Internet to conduct your research. Below are some suggested sources. (If you are unsure as to the validity (whether it is worthy or not) ask your teacher.):
Sources: (Use Dogpile, DuckDuckGo, Google, or Metacrawler to search online)
Read this Search Tips/Example (Different sites provide varied dates. Stick with the dates given.)
Websites to begin your search:
Britannica.com
Encyclopedia.com
New World Encyclopedia
Wikipedia (Be careful - Check with teacher to ensure accuracy)
Step 3: Summary - Write a two paragraph 150-word (minimum) summary why this event is significant to our world's history. Include the setting this event took place in or how it affected life then and how it has impacted the world then and now. Use the notes you've taken in your research to complete the summary. You will read/share this summary with the rest of the class when you present your finished poster (below).
Step 4: Illustration - On an 8x11 sheet of blank white paper, create an illustration of this significant historical event. You might include pictures, clipart, famous quotes, and more. This white paper is to be matted on a piece of construction paper. ***Your picture(s) MUST be large so that they can be seen from across the classroom. (See examples of student work below)
Step 5: Create Your Poster - Use a poster piece of contruction paper to mat your illustration of your event in the middle of the paper. Then, type the title and the date (or dates) in "Rockwell Extra-Bold" (72 Font Size) in Landscape printing format. For example: "1000 – 500 B.C.E." Print this out, mat it, then paste it below your illustration.
